Swing dancing in Australia

As a lot of you know, Swing encompasses a lot of dances. Therefor, in this review, I will more emphasise on Lindy Hop and make references to Swing in general from time to time.
Source of info most of all I'm writing here is based on my experiences in the Sydney Swing Scene, my trip to the Melbourne Lindy Exchange (MLX) and from other Aussie dancers words. It may not be a 100% true, but close to it.
What I have to say If we speak of Lindy Hop per say, it is well known here that it is pretty much limited to Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane. I know for fact that Melbourne scene is way huge! There's about 500 students (if not more!) per week that attends classes. Swing Patrol, the biggest Lindy Hop Dancer Factory employs about 20 teachers. Really, this organisation is huge! You can dance about every day of the week and the level of dancing is pretty much comparable to most major American cities. You can also dance some Balboa, Hollywood and Shag, but it's limited. As for East Coast Swing, since every one I danced with was good Lindy Hoppers, well, I did not had to dance ECS at all :o) Really, Melbourne Rocks!
By talking with other dancers, it seems clear that Perth, then Brisbane were the next cities where Lindy Hop was practised. To reinforce the saying, there were teachers from these two cities at the MLX.
Sydney, in a nutshell, is really NOT the place for Lindy Hop or Swing at all. All you will find here is Rock n' Roll or Rockabilly (Jive) dancers. I know a few that dances Lindy Hop but most have a really strong Rock n' Roll background and it shows (i.e. lots of 6 count). No one knows ECS either. Really, we cannot talk about Swing in Sydney. With ECS, I manage to dance with RnR dancers, but I have to limit myself to a couple of moves. Now by going at the Best of the Best dance competition, I found a handful of good Lindy Hop dancers, but I've never saw them dance anywhere else.
Now if you'd look around, you would find about 15 schools from which you can learn to Lindy Hop. Most of them are more Rock n' Roll teachers and they do not promote Swing Dancing. There's also a sort of a feud between the schools and if one organise something, they won't let the community know about it.
There's also a big lack of venues. If there's isn't a band playing (and they will play max 50% swing, the rest being Rock n' Roll), there's nowhere to dance. Fortunately, a bar in the City has been putting a RnR/Swing band on stage every Thursday, but that's basically it as good as it gets. At all venues, when there's Swing music on, it's mostly Neo-Swing or fast music. Basically, the dancing here is a big mix of lots of fast paced dance, but no Lindy Hop.
So that's my little experience of Lindy Hop in Australia. I hope to go to Perth and Brisbane to see how it is over there. I'll keep you informed!
As for me, can't wait to return to Melbourne!

Comme plusieurs d'entre vous le savez, le terme 'Swing' est tres general et englobe plusieurs danses. Par gout et par choix, l'analyse sommaire que je fais ici est celle du Lindy Hop en Australie. Je ferai aussi reference a d'autres danses lorsque cela s'y prete.

Bref... Si on parle du Lindy Hop en tant que tel, il est bien connu qu'ici le mouvement est principalement limite aux villes de Melbourne, Perth et Brisbane. Chose certaine, Melbourne est de loin la plus imposante! Swing Patrol, la plus grande societe a fabriquer des enthousiastes du Lindy Hop emploie un peu plus de 20 enseingnants. Chaque semaine, pres de 500 etudiants du Lindy Hop (si ce n'est plus) se presentent a ses cours. Ca vous donne une idee de l'ampleur! Cette organisation est vraiment extraordinaire. A Melbourne, on peut danser a peu pres tous les soirs de la semaine et le niveau de danse est comparable a la plupart des grandes cites americaines que j'ai visitees (Chicago, New York, Boston, Toronto CA). Vous pouvez aussi danser le Balboa, Hollywood, Shag, mais c'est limite. Je ne peux pas parler du East Coast Swing (tres semblable au Rock n' Roll), puisque toutes les partenaires avec qui j'ai danse etaient d'excellantes danseuses de Lindy Hop. Bref, Melbourne, c'est la place!
A travers diverses discussions avec d'autres danseurs, il m'a semble clair que Perth et Brisbane sont les deuxiemes villes en importance en ce qui a trait au Lindy Hop. Pour appuyer ces dires, deux enseignants au MLX venaient de ces villes.
Sydney, malgre qu'elle soit la plus importante ville d'Australie, n'est vraiment PAS la place pour danser le Lindy Hop ou le Swing. Vous trouverez par contre une forte presence de Rock n' Roll et Rockabilly (aussi appele Jive). Je connais bien une poignee de danseurs de Lindy Hop mais la plupart sont issus du Rock n' Roll et cela parait beaucoup dans leur style (c-a-d beaucoup de 6-temps). Personne ne connait le East Coast Swing non plus. Avec ce que je connais du East Coast Swing, je suis en mesure de danser avec les partenaires d'ici, mais sans connection, je dois me limiter dans mes mouvements. J'ai egalement trouve une poignee de bons danseurs de Lindy Hop a la competition Best of the Best qui a eu lieu a Sydney en Octobre, mais je n'ai les ai jamais revus. Notez que la competition a completement ete dominee par Melbourne.
Pourtant, si vous regardez autour, vous trouverez a peu pres 15 ecoles qui enseignent le Lindy Hop. La plupart des enseingnants sont plutot orientes vers le Rock n' Roll et ne propagent pas vraiment la bonne nouvelle si on peut dire. Il y a egalement une sorte de guerre entre les ecoles et si une d'entre elle organise un evenement, elle gardera cela pour elle-meme et n'en fera pas part a la communaute. Ce qui en fait une communaute tres fragmentee et desunie.
Il y a aussi un manque d'endroits ou danser. S'il n'y a pas un Band qui joue quelque part (et la plupart de ceux que vous trouverez jouent un repertoire majoritairement Rock n' Roll), il n'y a nulle part ou danser. Je n'ai jamais entendu parler d'une soiree DJ. Heureusement pour moi, il y a un bar au centre-ville qui met sur scene un bon band qui joue un Contenu 50% Swing/Rock n' Roll tous les jeudi soir, mais c'est a peu pres tout ce qu'on trouve. La musique Swing qui est jouee est principalement de style Neo-Swing ou du Swing avec un tempo rapide.
Voila ce qui resume mon experience du Lindy Hop en Australie. Je compte un jour me rendre a Perth et Brisbane pour voir de quoi il en revient la-bas. Je vous tiendrai au courant!
Pour ce qui est de moi-meme, je ne peux m'empecher de rever aux jours Ou j'irai vivre a Melbourne!
