Holiday Romance
Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra
1998, Universal Music

This is the first major label release from this Halifax-based band. A must have album for all swing fans, this band has one of the sweetest, clearest sounds on the scene. One of the largest bands around right now (composed of an eleven piece orchestra), they're one of the closest things to a big band you're liable to find in the swing scene. The vocals are incredible, the arrangements superb. This album was recorded at "Le Studio" in Morin Heights, Quebec, which provided, in my humble opinion, a classic vintage sound which perfectly represents the atmosphere created by this great band. The mood of all the songs is cheery, and the music (with the exception of only a few tunes) is great for dancing. Oh yeah! Don't forget to catch them live as soon as you can - their show is not to be missed!

JFSO's debut album. Several factors led me to this rating, which may be slightly misleading. First and foremost, I owned the Holiday Romance album first, and that album's superb quality seems to push this album farther down than it should be. Even though I should be rating this album independently from its follow-up, the fact that many of the tracks are common to both albums forces me to compare the two. Second, the difference in recording quality between the two albums is very noticeable. There are still, however, many good tracks on this album and is a must for hardcore JFSO fans like myself. In comparing both albums and seeing the group live several times, the rate at which the band has matured is pleasant to see. 10 tracks, 3 tracks common to Holiday Romance. Great tracks (only available on this album): "Country Club" (The Johnny Favourite Theme); "The Life Desire"; "Evangeline"; "Cheek to Cheek".

Very bad. Everything about this sucks. Unless you're a DJ and absolutely
have to own everything just for the sake of having it - PLEASE don't
buy it!!! |

Not the bottom of the pile, but close. While there are some positive
features - either sound quality, content, or the music itself are poor. |

Good recording. This falls under the category of CDs that you take out
and dust off every once in a while for the few good tracks that are on it.
You won't love it - but you won't hate it either. |

Very good selection. Music that falls under this category comes from a
good sounding band(s), has good recording quality and arrangements. Lacks only a distinctive sound or energy to leap to the realm of
greatness. This is a must have. |

Murderistic! Killa' Dilla'! This is a real stand-out recording by a stand-
out band. This is a "should already have" for all of you hepcats out
there. If you don't already have it - GET IT!!! Or you'll have to answer
to Big Vic Vega!!! |
